STS empowers and educates our community, advocating for sustainable solutions to the Tijuana River sewage crisis. Although, we especially strive to bring awareness to our youth because we know that when students get involved, change happens.

We achieve our mission by creating a space for students to advocate and make an impact. We host monthly meetings where dozens of students get informed, take action, and empower themselves to create change.

Since our founding in 2023, we have made a meaningful impact in our community. From educating students through monthly school club meetings, all the way to traveling to the state capitol to talk with government officials.

Andrea Reyes & Kleber Toala
Our two leaders have been hard at work within Stop The Sewage for a combined 6 years. Andrea is a senior at Coronado High who has worked with Stop The Sewage for 4 years, she spends her time devoted to engineering and problem solving. Kleber is a Junior at Coronado High School and this is his third year with Stop The Sewage, he is involved with ASB as well as their CoSA program. Both of our leaders are ready to step up and take the lead against this crisis.

Our two deputies will spend the year learning the ropes of leadership as they work to tackle this multifaceted crisis. Madden is a junior at Coronado High who has been an active member for three years. Danielle-Elizabeth is an engaged STEM and engineering student, her and Madden look forward to working together for another amazing year of student advocacy.

Laura Wilkinson-Sinton & Abbie Hartge
Laura and Abbie have been our largest supports from the start. Laura's experience and connections with media and public policy present students with unique interviews, platforms, and meetings. Abbie provides us with an invaluable space to come together as a club with amazing food and speakers, all while advocating with us within the highschool. Both of our mentors have spent countless hours to help build our club into what it is, and we are so grateful for their support.

Making Change: A Quantifiable Impact
Sacramento Lobbying Trips (2024, 2025, 2026)
Our club has taken four separate lobbying trips to the state capitol to lobby for specific pieces of legislation. Across all of these trips we have knocked on every Senator and Assemblypersons doors, sat in on judicial hearings, and experienced the rich political history of our state. These trips provide unique and unmatched civic engagement for the students at Coronado High, and across the San Diego Region as a part of the Youth Circle and Tijuana River Coalition.
These experiences are given to students at little to no cost, thanks to the generous donations made by community members who give their time and money to support meaningful student learning opportunities.

The County of San Diego is committed to recognizing and honoring those individuals and organizations that are dedicated to the best ideals of public service and the Coronado High School Stop the Sewage Club is one such worthy organization;
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED by Chair Terra Lawson-Remer and all members of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors on this 9th day of December 2025 that they commend the CORONADO HIGH SCHOOL STOP THE SEWAGE CLUB for their outstanding service, leadership, and commitment to the residents of San Diego County and do hereby declare this day to be "CORONADO HIGH SCHOOL STOP THE SEWAGE CLUB DAY" throughout San Diego County.
Coronado Unified, Club of the Year (2024, 2025, 2026)
For three years in a row, we have won the Coronado Unified School District Student Club of the Year. This honor is given "in recognition of exceptional leadership and outstanding commitment to our school and community." This is the first time a club has been recognized three consecutive years.
400 Signature Petition (2024)
We utilized our student-created petition to successfully persuade the City Council of Coronado to take a stand and declare a state of emergency regarding Coronado's ongoing cross-border pollution crisis.
450 Letters (2024)
Following a request to the Coronado Unified Governing Board from Coronado High School students to join their advocacy to stop the sewage pollution in local ocean water, the board members stepped up to lend their support to the cause. The school community collected 448 letters on CUSD letterhead which were delivered to Sacramento on May 17, 2024.
5 Protests and Demonstrations
Our advocacy includes pulling all "levers" of political change, including numerous peaceful protests. We have participated and led 3 beach protests on the beaches of Coronado, we have hosted a student protest to the Coastal Commission, along with collaborating for a Heal our Coast educational protest.
6 Impactful Speaking Engagements
Through our advocacy, we have spoken before the CUSD School Board 3 times, the Coronado City Council two times, once to Coronado Rotary, and once for the California Coastal Commission.
Over 5000 Hours of Collective Service
As the biggest student-led club on campus with more than 80 members, we have put over five thousand hours towards advocacy and education in our community.
4 State Bills and 150 Million in Federal Funding
While we can't claim all the credit, we have played a meaningful role in passing 4 pieces of state legislation and appropriating over 150 dollars in federal funds, all to stop the torrent of sewage plaguing our beaches
